Dental Implants: Restoring Your Smile
When it comes to making good first impressions, it’s your sparkly smile that makes all the difference. But you can’t have a good smile, if you’re not confident about your teeth to begin with.
Now, if you have darker teeth, that problem can easily be solved by a teeth whitening procedure. However, your teeth would need more work if you’ve got gaps or missing teeth.
Not to worry though. Even for this predicament, there is a solution: dental implants!
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are surgical implants made from titanium, an anti-rust metal that fuses with your jawbone. These implants act as an anchor and are completely safe to use in your body. When added to your jawbone surgically, the bone grows around the tooth and joins to it, thus supporting it.
This procedure isn’t just a great alternative for single tooth loss. Even if you have total tooth loss, you can still opt for this procedure for a total restoration.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Typically, the answer would be yes. However, there are few provisos.
First, the dentist will have to determine whether your medical history allows for any dental procedure. For example, if you have an illness like diabetes or leukemia, these conditions may delay your body’s healing ability. If you’re receiving chemotherapy, and are being treated with bisophosphonates, this will also need to be taken into account. In addition, if you’re taking a bone-building drug such as Bovina or Fosamax, your dentist may reconsider giving you the procedure.
Additionally, if you smoke, this may also be a matter of concern since your mouth health may not support the procedure.
Your dental history will also be taken into account. Whether you brush and floss, have had other procedures or have sensitive gums, all this will be scrutinized.
The second caveat is the cost. Typically, a single implant procedure can range from $1000 and onwards. The price will increase, based on whether you need partial or full implants. Nevertheless, if you can afford it, or find a more affordable dentist, you won’t need to concern yourself with the overall cost.
