How Sugar Wages A War In Your Mouth!
Is there any doubt that sugar causes damage to your teeth?
Not in the least bit!
It’s an established fact that sugar ruins your oral hygiene and causes a multitude of problems in your mouth.
However, not many people are aware of how sugar goes about being so destructive to your dental health. Once you know about what happens in your mouth when you eat sugar, you’ll probably find it easier to stay away from those sugary delicacies.
What do the experts say?
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NICDR) states that eating sugar helps nourish the harmful bacteria in your mouth.
These bacteria produce acids which are detrimental for the protective outer covering of the teeth called the enamel and causes cavities to be formed.
If you do not take care of your oral health, the cavities grow deep enough to expose the inner layers of the tooth. The result is pain in your teeth which may gradually get worse and even lead to tooth loss.
The bacteria’s acid production process is very quick. The New York Times (NYT) reports that it takes only 20 seconds for the harmful bacteria in your mouth to convert sugar into acids which slowly dissolve the enamel and eventually cause the tooth to decay.
The minerals in your saliva like calcium and phosphates can help your teeth recover. However, if your sugar intake is very high, the healing process is not effective because the damage occurs at a higher rate.
How frequently you consume sugars also matters a great deal. The more often you eat sugary substances, the greater the damage done to your teeth. Liquids containing sugars are the most harmful because they can accumulate in the hard to reach places in your mouth and become bacterial hotspots.
Taking care of your teeth
Eating foods which are rich in calcium such as milk, cheese, and other dairy products can help repair some of the damage caused. Stimulating the saliva flow in your mouth is another way of naturally healing your teeth.
Keep sugar intake to a minimum and brush regularly after meals. Using fluoride based toothpastes can also be useful in preventing cavities.
